The Show at a Glance

Abbott Elementary premiered on ABC in December 2021 with a special preview episode, then launched its regular season in January 2022. Created by Quinta Brunson — who also stars as the idealistic second-grade teacher Janine Teague — it quickly became one of the highest-rated network comedies in years and an awards-season darling.

Melissa Schemmenti — The Tough One

Lisa Ann Walter plays Melissa, the third-grade teacher with deep South Philly roots, extensive family connections, and a no-nonsense approach to everything. She's fiercely loyal and occasionally implies connections to organized crime.

Gregory Eddie — The Reluctant Convert

Tyler James Williams plays Gregory, a former substitute teacher who joins the staff full-time. He starts out trying to remain detached but slowly becomes invested in the school and his colleagues — including developing romantic feelings for Janine.

Principal Ava Coleman — The Chaos Agent

Janelle James plays Principal Ava Coleman, one of TV's great comedic creations. Ava got the job through questionable means and uses her position primarily for personal entertainment, social media content, and avoiding accountability. She is somehow also occasionally deeply perceptive.

Jacob Hill — The Enthusiast

Chris Perfetti plays Jacob, the social studies teacher who approaches education with maximum enthusiasm and minimum self-awareness. He means well, always. He is not always right about what that means in practice.
