Baby Reindeer Trivia: Netflix's Most Disturbing โ and Most Human โ Show of 2024
Baby Reindeer arrived on Netflix in April 2024 and immediately became one of the most discussed television series in recent memory. Created by and starring Richard Gadd, the seven-episode limited series is based on Gadd's own lived experience โ a story about stalking, trauma, complicity, and the impossibility of simple victim narratives. It won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series and made careers.
If you watched it and think you absorbed every detail โ the emails, the voicemails, the devastating backstory โ the Baby Reindeer Trivia Quiz is the test.
What Makes Baby Reindeer Different
Most stalker narratives are structured around the stalker as a pure threat and the victim as a passive sufferer. Baby Reindeer systematically refuses both of those positions.
Donny Dunn is a victim. He is also a participant in his own victimhood in ways the show is unsparing about examining. He does not immediately report Martha to the police. He continues to interact with her. He allows the situation to continue partly because he finds it easier than confronting the deeper reasons he feels unable to simply walk away. The series is smart enough to not present this as moral failure but as psychological realism โ and that is exactly what made it so uncomfortable and so recognized.
The Characters
Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd)
Donny works at a London pub, performs stand-up comedy to mostly empty rooms, and is going nowhere in the way that only people with real potential go nowhere. He is charming, self-aware about his failures, and deeply kind in ways that become liabilities. When he offers a cup of tea to a distressed woman at the bar, he is not flirting โ he is just being decent. That decent impulse changes his life entirely.Martha (Jessica Gunning)
Martha is the stalker. She is also a former solicitor who lost her career to mental illness. She is funny, in a way. She is desperately lonely. She is also dangerous and relentless and capable of escalation that makes Donny's life increasingly unlivable. Jessica Gunning's performance refuses easy characterization: Martha is not a monster, and she is not pitiable. She is a person in profound distress who has decided, incorrectly and obsessively, that Donny is the solution to everything. The specific numbers the show provides โ 41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemail, 744 tweets, 106 pages of letters โ make Martha's obsession quantifiable in a way that is more disturbing than any dramatic flourish could be.
Darrien (Tom Goodman-Hill)
The figure of Darrien, a successful TV writer who mentors and then abuses Donny, is in many ways the show's true center of gravity. Donny's inability to fully process what happened with Darrien is the psychological key to understanding why he responds to Martha the way he does. The show earns its complexity precisely here โ it takes two episodes before Donny's story about himself begins to crack, and what emerges underneath is the real story.Teri (Nava Mau)
Donny's girlfriend Teri is a trans woman who offers him the most genuine human connection in his life at a time when he is least capable of accepting it. Nava Mau's performance earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress โ making her and Jessica Gunning the first two women to both be nominated in the same supporting category for the same limited series in Emmy history. The Edinburgh Fringe Origins
Before Baby Reindeer was a Netflix phenomenon, it was a one-man stage show. Richard Gadd performed the original Baby Reindeer at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019, where it won the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show. The Fringe is the world's largest arts festival and the most competitive platform for new comedic work โ winning there is a significant signal.
The stage version was a raw, confessional monologue. Turning it into a seven-episode television series required Gadd and his collaborators to dramatize what had originally been told directly to an audience. The result preserved the intimacy while adding the texture of dramatized scenes, additional characters, and the visual language of television.
Emmy Wins
At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2024, Baby Reindeer won:
The wins for a seven-episode Netflix series with no established IP, no famous pre-existing characters, and subject matter as difficult as sexual abuse and stalking sent a clear message about what the industry considered to be the most significant work of the year.
