Backrooms Trivia: From 4chan Creepypasta to A24 Movie

The Backrooms started with a photograph. One photograph of a yellow room with fluorescent lights and damp carpet, posted anonymously on 4chan in May 2019. Seven years later, it is an A24 feature film. The journey from creepypasta to cinema is one of the most remarkable stories in internet horror history — and this guide covers all of it.

The Origin: May 12, 2019

An anonymous 4chan user started a thread asking others to "post disquieting images that just feel off." One response included the now-iconic photograph of a sprawling yellow room and a description that launched an entire mythology:

*"If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old, moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in."*

The word "noclip" — a video game cheat that lets players pass through solid objects — became the gateway mechanic. The idea that reality itself has bugs, and you can accidentally fall through the floor into an infinite, hostile space, resonated with millions of people.

The Levels

The internet community expanded the original single-room concept into a vast catalogue of levels, each with distinct environments, dangers, and survival rules.

Level 0 is the original — mono-yellow walls, wet carpet, buzzing fluorescent lights. It is relatively safe but disorienting. The danger is psychological: the sheer scale of six hundred million square miles of empty rooms erodes sanity.

Level 1 resembles an industrial parking garage — concrete floors, dim lighting, exposed pipes. It is darker and colder than Level 0, with more frequent entity encounters.

Level 2 consists of narrow maintenance tunnels with extreme heat. The confined spaces and high temperature make it one of the most dangerous levels.

Level 37: The Poolrooms became one of the most visually iconic concepts in the entire mythology — an endless complex of indoor swimming pools, blue-green tile, and ambient lighting. The Poolrooms feel almost peaceful, which makes them deeply unsettling.

Kane Pixels: The 16-Year-Old Who Changed Everything

In January 2022, Kane Parsons — a 16-year-old high school student from Northern California working under the name Kane Pixels — uploaded a short film called "The Backrooms (Found Footage)" to YouTube. The video presented itself as a VHS recording from the 1990s showing someone accidentally entering the Backrooms and being pursued by an unseen creature.

The visual effects were so polished that viewers assumed it was made by a professional studio. It went viral, accumulating tens of millions of views and spawning an entire web series. Parsons introduced the Async Research Institute — a fictional organization that discovers the Backrooms and begins conducting experiments within them — creating a narrative framework that gave the mythology structure and stakes.

The A24 Movie

On February 6, 2023, A24 announced a feature film adaptation based on Parsons' work, with Parsons himself directing alongside Dan Cohen. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, and Finn Bennett.

The Backrooms movie releases on May 29, 2026, making it one of the most anticipated horror films of the year. It represents a remarkable trajectory: from anonymous 4chan post to teenage YouTube sensation to A24 theatrical release in seven years.
