Maul's Full Timeline
If you only watched the movies, you saw maybe 10% of Maul's story. Here's the full picture:
The Phantom Menace (1999) โ Maul's debut. Trained by Darth Sidious from childhood, he tracks the Jedi to Naboo, kills Qui-Gon Jinn, and is cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi. The galaxy assumes he's dead.
The Clone Wars (Seasons 4-5) โ Maul survived. Fueled by hatred, he lived as a deranged creature on the junk planet Lotho Minor for over a decade. His brother Savage Opress finds him, Mother Talzin restores his mind, and Maul begins his quest for revenge against both Obi-Wan and Sidious.
The Shadow Collective โ Maul unites Black Sun, the Pyke Syndicate, and the Hutt Cartel into a criminal alliance. Combined with Mandalore's Death Watch, he becomes powerful enough to overthrow a planet.
The Siege of Mandalore โ Maul takes control of Mandalore by defeating Pre Vizsla in combat and claiming the Darksaber. He rules from the shadows until Ahsoka Tano leads a siege to capture him โ one of the best arcs in all of Star Wars.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) โ Set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Maul is revealed as the secret leader of Crimson Dawn, with Qi'ra reporting directly to him.
Rebels (Season 3) โ Maul's final chapter. He finds Obi-Wan on Tatooine. Their last duel is three strikes long. Maul dies in Obi-Wan's arms, asking about "the Chosen One."
Why Maul Matters
Maul represents something rare in Star Wars: a villain whose story got *deeper* over time instead of shallower. Dave Filoni's work on Clone Wars and Rebels transformed a cool-looking henchman into a tragic figure consumed by revenge and abandoned by the dark side.
His relationship with Obi-Wan โ enemy, obsession, and in the end, something almost like understanding โ is one of the most layered rivalries in the franchise.
