What Is Euphoria About?
Euphoria is an HBO drama series created by Sam Levinson, adapted from an Israeli series of the same name. It premiered on June 16, 2019, and follows Rue Bennett โ a 17-year-old struggling with drug addiction, mental health, and the search for identity in a suburban American town.
The show is narrated by Rue herself, which means you're never entirely sure what's real and what's colored by her perception. It's told in extended flashbacks, dream sequences, and operatically staged musical numbers alongside brutal, unfiltered depictions of addiction and trauma. It is not for everyone. It is very much for some people.
The Characters You Need to Know
Rue Bennett (Zendaya)
The narrator and emotional center. Rue starts the series returning from rehab and immediately relapsing. Her journey through addiction, love, and self-destruction drives both seasons. Zendaya won back-to-back Emmy Awards for this role โ at 24, she became the youngest lead drama actress winner in Emmy history.Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer)
Jules moves to the suburb at the start of Season 1. Her relationship with Rue is intense, complicated, and central to both seasons. Hunter Schafer, who plays Jules, is also trans โ which informs both the authenticity and the nuance of Jules's storyline.Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi)
East Highland's star quarterback. Nate is magnetic, violent, and deeply psychologically damaged by his father's double life. His relationship with Maddy and later Cassie creates much of the Season 2 conflict.Fezco "Fez" (Angus Cloud)
Rue's drug dealer who becomes something like a father figure to her. Fez's warmth and protectiveness toward Rue make him one of the show's most beloved characters. His backstory โ revealed in Season 2 โ is heartbreaking. Angus Cloud passed away in July 2023; his performance remains one of the show's defining elements.Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney)
Sweet, insecure, and catastrophically bad at staying out of her own way. Cassie's Season 2 arc โ secretly dating Nate, her best friend Maddy's ex โ is the engine of the season's drama and Sydney Sweeney's strongest work on the show.Lexi Howard (Maude Apatow)
Cassie's quieter, more observant sister. Lexi's Season 2 arc โ writing and staging a play called *Our Life* about her friends and family โ is one of the most ambitious narrative choices the show makes, and it lands.Season by Season: What You Need to Know
