Game of Thrones Trivia: How Well Do You Know Westeros?

For eight seasons, Game of Thrones redefined what television could do. Political intrigue, shocking deaths, dragons, White Walkers, and a sprawling cast of morally complex characters made it the most-discussed show on the planet. Even years later, the world of Westeros rewards obsessive attention to detail.

Before you take the trivia quiz, here are some of the facts and moments that true fans have locked in โ€” and a few that even serious viewers sometimes get wrong.

The Houses and Their Words

Every great house in Westeros has a sigil and house words that reflect their identity:

  • House Stark: "Winter Is Coming" โ€” a warning, not a threat. The Starks know what is coming and take it seriously.
  • House Lannister: "Hear Me Roar" โ€” though their more famous unofficial motto is "A Lannister always pays his debts."
  • House Baratheon: "Ours Is the Fury" โ€” appropriately fierce for the house that won the Iron Throne by force.
  • House Targaryen: "Fire and Blood" โ€” two words that summarize their entire history.
  • House Tyrell: "Growing Strong" โ€” more sophisticated than it sounds. Growth is patient power.
  • Deaths That Changed Everything

Game of Thrones made its name by being willing to kill characters who felt untouchable. The most significant:

Ned Stark (Season 1): The moment the show told its audience the rules were different. The main character, the moral center, gone in the first season. Nothing was the same afterward.

The Red Wedding (Season 3): Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, and Talisa killed at the wedding of Edmure Tully at The Twins. Orchestrated by Lord Walder Frey and Tywin Lannister. Still one of the most devastating moments in television history.

Joffrey's poisoning (Season 4): The death everyone had been waiting for, and it still managed to be shocking.

The Night King (Season 8): Killed by Arya Stark with a Valyrian steel dagger in "The Long Night" โ€” a subversion of the expected hero's arc.

    Valyrian Steel and Dragonglass

The only materials that can kill White Walkers. Key Valyrian steel swords:

  • Ice: The ancestral Stark greatsword, melted down by Tywin Lannister to make two swords.
  • Longclaw: Given to Jon Snow by Lord Commander Jeor Mormont of the Night's Watch.
  • Oathkeeper: Made from the steel of Ice, given to Brienne of Tarth by Jaime Lannister.
  • Dragons and Their Names

Daenerys's three dragons were named after her late brothers and husband:

  • Drogon: Named after Khal Drogo.
  • Rhaegal: Named after her brother Rhaegar.
  • Viserion: Named after her brother Viserys.
  • Drogon was the largest and the one Daenerys most frequently rode into battle.

    Key Locations

  • King's Landing: The capital of the Seven Kingdoms, home of the Iron Throne and the Red Keep.
  • Winterfell: Ancestral seat of House Stark in the North.
  • Dragonstone: Island fortress east of King's Landing, ancestral seat of House Targaryen.
  • The Wall: 700-foot structure of ice dividing the realm from the lands beyond.
  • Braavos: A free city across the Narrow Sea, home to the Iron Bank and the Faceless Men.
