Lord of the Rings Trivia Quiz: One Quiz to Rule Them All

J.R.R. Tolkien published The Fellowship of the Ring in 1954. Seven decades later, it remains the template against which all epic fantasy is measured. Peter Jackson's film trilogy (2001-2003) introduced Middle-earth to a generation that hadn't read the books, won seventeen Academy Awards, and changed what blockbuster filmmaking looked like. Knowing both is the mark of a true fan.

The Fellowship: All Nine Members

The Fellowship of the Ring is formed at the Council of Rivendell to accompany the Ring-bearer to Mordor:

  • Frodo Baggins — The Ring-bearer. Hobbit from the Shire.
  • Samwise Gamgee — Frodo's gardener and loyal companion. The true hero of the story, according to Tolkien himself.
  • Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) — Hobbit. Becomes one of the riders at Pelennor Fields.
  • Peregrin Took (Pippin) — Hobbit. Serves in the Guard of the Citadel of Gondor.
  • Gandalf the Grey — Istari wizard. Falls in Moria and is reborn as Gandalf the White.
  • Aragorn — Ranger of the North. Heir of Isildur. Becomes King Elessar of Gondor.
  • Legolas — Elf of Mirkwood. Son of King Thranduil.
  • Gimli — Dwarf. Son of Glóin (one of the dwarves from The Hobbit).
  • Boromir — Man of Gondor. Son of Steward Denethor. Dies at Amon Hen defending Merry and Pippin.
  • The Rings of Power

The rings were forged in three groups:

  • Three for Elven-kings: Narya (fire), Nenya (water/adamant), Vilya (air) — given to Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond
  • Seven for Dwarf-lords: mostly destroyed or reclaimed by Sauron
  • Nine for Mortal Men: their bearers became the Nazgûl (Ringwraiths), enslaved forever to the One Ring
  • One for the Dark Lord, forged by Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom
  • Key Locations in Middle-earth

The Shire — Homeland of the hobbits. Rural, peaceful, largely unaware of the outside world.

Rivendell (Imladris) — Elven refuge ruled by Elrond Half-elven. Site of the Council that forms the Fellowship.

Lothlórien — Elven forest ruled by Galadriel and Celeborn. Ancient, protected, timeless.

Moria (Khazad-dûm) — Ancient Dwarven kingdom beneath the Misty Mountains. Now a tomb. Site of Gandalf's fall.

Helm's Deep — Fortress of Rohan. Site of the Battle of Helm's Deep in The Two Towers.

Minas Tirith — Capital of Gondor. The White City. Site of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Mordor — Sauron's realm. Black, volcanic, guarded by the Black Gate and the Mountains of Shadow. Contains Mount Doom.

Mount Doom (Orodruin) — Active volcano in Mordor. The only place the One Ring can be destroyed, in the same fires where it was forged.

    The Languages of Middle-earth

Tolkien was a professor of Old English and Middle English at Oxford. He invented complete languages for his world:

Quenya — The ancient, formal language of the Elves. Used in ceremony and poetry. "Namárië" (Farewell), spoken by Galadriel as the Fellowship departs, is in Quenya.

Sindarin — The common spoken Elvish. The language you hear most often in the films. Examples: "Mellon" (friend), "Mithrandir" (Gandalf's elvish name, meaning "Grey Pilgrim").

Khuzdul — The secret language of the Dwarves. Rarely spoken in front of outsiders. "Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!" ("Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!")

Black Speech — Language of Mordor, created by Sauron. The inscription on the One Ring is in Black Speech.

    Most Commonly Missed Trivia Questions

Who destroys the One Ring? Gollum — accidentally. Frodo claims the Ring at the Crack of Doom rather than destroying it. Gollum attacks him, bites off his finger, and falls into the fire. Frodo intended to keep it; Gollum saved Middle-earth by accident.

What does "Mellon" mean? Friend. The inscription on the Doors of Durin says "speak, friend, and enter." Everyone over-complicates it until Frodo realises you just say the elvish word for friend.

What is Gandalf's real name? Olórin. His original name among the Maiar (angelic beings). In Middle-earth he is called Mithrandir by the Elves, Tharkûn by the Dwarves, and Gandalf by Men.

How old is Gollum? Approximately 589 years old by the time he falls into the fire of Mount Doom. He was a hobbit-like creature called Sméagol before the Ring corrupted him over five centuries.

What is the name of Aragorn's sword? Andúril — Flame of the West — reforged from the shards of Narsil, the sword that cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand in the Second Age.

    The Key Battles

Battle of Helm's Deep — The Two Towers. 10,000 Uruk-hai assault the fortress of Rohan. Turned by the arrival of Gandalf and Éomer's cavalry.

Battle of the Pelennor Fields — Return of the King. The siege of Minas Tirith. The Witch-king of Angmar is killed by Éowyn ("I am no man") and Merry.

Battle of the Black Gate — Return of the King. The final diversion. Aragorn leads the remaining forces to the Gate to draw Sauron's eye while Frodo carries the Ring to Mount Doom.
