The NCAA tournament is the purest form of do-or-die competition in American sports. One bad game and you're done. No best-of-seven series. No second chances. That single-elimination format is what produces the most dramatic moments in all of sports.

Since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985 (and 68 in 2011), we've seen:

No. 16 seeds beating No. 1 seeds (UMBC vs. Virginia in 2018 was the first — and it wasn't close)

Mid-major programs making the Final Four (Loyola-Chicago, VCU, George Mason)

Perfect brackets remaining mathematically impossible (odds: 1 in 9.2 quintillion)

The Greatest Upsets in Tournament History

March Madness lives for the upset. Some of the most memorable:

UMBC 74, Virginia 54 (2018) — The first time a 16-seed beat a 1-seed in the men's tournament. Virginia was the overall No. 1 seed.

Villanova over Georgetown (1985) — An 8-seed winning the championship was unheard of. Villanova shot 79% from the field in the title game.

NC State's 1983 Run — Jim Valvano's team won the championship despite being a 6-seed, famously running around looking for someone to hug.

Bracket Strategy Tips

If you want to outperform your office pool:

Don't pick all 1-seeds to make the Final Four. It's happened exactly once since the tournament expanded.

A 12-seed beats a 5-seed almost every year. Look for strong mid-major programs in the 12 slot.

Watch for teams with tournament experience. Coaches who've been to the Final Four before have a significant edge.
