The Concept: What Is an Expendable?
The central premise of Mickey 17 is built around an idea that is simultaneously absurd and chilling: the "expendable."
In the film's future, a colony ship is travelling to the ice planet Niflheim to establish a human settlement. The mission is dangerous — alien terrain, hostile creatures, unknown conditions. Rather than risk valued crew members on the most dangerous tasks, the mission uses expendables: workers who are stored as a digital blueprint and reprinted as a new physical version each time they die.
Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) is Expendable No. 17 — meaning he has been killed sixteen times and reprinted as a new version of himself. Every time he dies, the crew prints a new Mickey from the same blueprint. The new Mickey has his memories (up to the last backup) but may be physically slightly different.
The system treats human life as an operational resource. You die. You are printed again. You continue working. Simple.
The Problem: Two Mickeys
The film begins its central crisis when Mickey 17 survives a mission he was presumed dead on — and returns to the ship to find that Mickey 18 has already been printed in his place.
Having two copies of the same expendable alive simultaneously is a serious protocol violation. The solution is brutally simple: one of them is supposed to be killed. The conflict between Mickey 17 (who survived against all odds and is not interested in dying again) and Mickey 18 (who was printed legitimately and has as much claim to existence as his predecessor) drives the film's dramatic engine.
Robert Pattinson plays both versions simultaneously — a performance challenge he meets with remarkable specificity. Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 are the same person but developed differently in response to different experiences. They have the same baseline but are recognizably distinct.
The Cast
Robert Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes (Mickey 17 and Mickey 18). Pattinson continues his post-Twilight run of distinctly uncommercial choices — The Lighthouse, The Batman, Good Time — and brings the same unsettling physicality to the dual role.
Naomi Ackie plays Nasha, Mickey's partner aboard the ship. Ackie, who won widespread acclaim for playing Whitney Houston in I Wanna Dance with Somebody, is the film's emotional anchor — the person who knows Mickey better than anyone and has to figure out what that means when there are two of him.
Mark Ruffalo plays Kenneth Marshall, the colony's pompous, self-aggrandizing leader. The performance is deliberately satirical — Marshall is a small man given enormous power who turns that power into a personal vanity project. Ruffalo plays the character with a comic grandiosity that makes him both ridiculous and genuinely threatening.
Toni Collette plays Sylvie Marshall, Kenneth's wife and co-commander. Where Kenneth is bluster and spectacle, Sylvie is colder and more calculating.
Steven Yeun plays Timo Marshall, another key crew member whose relationship with Mickey complicates the film's central power dynamics.
The Setting: Niflheim
The colony mission is headed to Niflheim — an ice planet named for the Norse mythological realm of cold and mist. The name is apt: the planet is forbidding, freezing, and largely hostile to human ambition.
The indigenous creatures of Niflheim are called Creepers — and the colony's default approach is to treat them as obstacles to be eliminated. One of the film's more politically charged threads is Mickey's growing understanding that the Creepers are not simply hostile aliens but beings with their own form of intelligence and community. The colonists' relationship with the Creepers echoes the real-world history of colonization — an echo Bong Joon-ho makes deliberately uncomfortable.
