Mother's Day Trivia Questions & Fun Facts 2026

Mother's Day is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the world โ€” observed in some form in over 80 countries. But the holiday's origins, evolution, and global variations are far richer and stranger than the greeting card industry suggests. Whether you're prepping for a trivia night, planning a family gathering, or just brushing up before our quiz, here are the essential facts and stories behind Mother's Day.

The Origins of Mother's Day

The modern Mother's Day was founded by Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia. Following the death of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, in 1905, Anna campaigned tirelessly for a national day to honor mothers. Ann Reeves Jarvis had herself organized "Mothers' Day Work Clubs" during the Civil War to provide care across political lines, and had called for a "Mother's Friendship Day" to reunite divided communities.

Anna Jarvis organized the first official Mother's Day celebration on May 10, 1908, at Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton. She chose white carnations (her mother's favorite flower) as the holiday's symbol. By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson had signed a proclamation making the second Sunday in May the official national Mother's Day.

The ironic twist: Anna Jarvis spent the rest of her life fighting the commercialization she felt had corrupted her holiday. She called greeting card companies "charlatans" and actively protested against the candy and flower industries that had made the day into a commercial event. She died in 1948, penniless and institutionalized, horrified at what Mother's Day had become.

Global Mother's Day Traditions

United Kingdom โ€” Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, a tradition dating to the 16th century. Originally, servants and apprentices were given the day off to visit their "mother church" and their families. The Simnel cake โ€” a rich fruitcake with marzipan layers โ€” is a traditional gift.

Mexico and Latin America โ€” May 10th is fixed as Mother's Day in Mexico regardless of which day of the week it falls on. Celebrations often begin before dawn with serenatas (musical serenades) outside mothers' windows.

Ethiopia โ€” Antrosht is a multi-day harvest festival celebrating motherhood. Families reunite; daughters bring vegetables and spices; sons bring meat; and the family sings traditional songs celebrating the mother.

Thailand โ€” Mother's Day is celebrated on August 12th, the birthday of Queen Sirikit, who is revered as the mother of the nation. Jasmine (associated with mothers in Thai culture) rather than carnations is the traditional flower.

Nepal โ€” Mata Tirtha Aaunsi, celebrated in late April or early May, is one of the world's oldest mother-honoring festivals. Families make pilgrimages to sacred ponds to offer prayers for living mothers โ€” and to honor those who have passed.
