How the NFL Draft Works
Rounds: The draft runs 7 rounds, with each of the 32 teams holding one pick per round (plus compensatory additions).
Pick order: Teams generally draft in reverse order of their previous season's record — the worst teams get the best picks.
Compensatory picks: The NFL awards extra picks (placed at the ends of rounds 3–7) to teams that lost more valuable free agents than they signed in the prior year. These are calculated based on contract value, playing time, and Pro Bowl appearances.
Trading: Teams can trade picks — including future picks — making draft day a chess match within a chess match. Picks can be traded up to two years in advance.
