11. What record did the opening weekend set? The biggest domestic opening in box office history: 360 million dollars across 4,487 North American cinemas, ahead of the 357.1 million taken by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

12. So why do so many articles say 355 million? Because that was Sunday's studio estimate, which put the film second behind Endgame. The actual figure reported on Monday was 360 million, which moved it into first place. Pieces published on 2 August 2026 mostly carry the estimate and were never updated.

13. What did it take on opening day? 168 million dollars including preview screenings, beating the 157.4 million Endgame managed on its first day.

15. Who does Sadie Sink play? Jean Grey. Her face is not shown until roughly halfway through, and her identity is the film's most closely guarded secret.

16. What can she do? She is a telepath who can take over the mind of anyone within about 33 feet, jumping from body to body. She uses that ability to send possessed bystanders against Department of Damage Control facilities.

17. Is she the villain? No, although the film lets you believe it for a long stretch. Damage Control is the antagonist. Jean had an older sister, Sara, with the same power, who was taken by Bill Metzger's team from a park while the two of them were practising. Jean is trying to find her.

18. Who works out the truth with Peter? Yelena Belova. Peter goes to her early on for help identifying a villain who can hop between bodies, and her involvement is what turns the investigation away from Jean and towards Damage Control.

19. What is in the post-credits scene? One scene, with no actors in it. Ned's Spider-tracking app pulls back past Earth and the Moon and out into open space, with a Spider icon sitting alone in the dark. Marvel's closing card says Spider-Man will return without naming the film.

Round 4: The comics

20. Which comic did Spider-Man first appear in? Amazing Fantasy issue 15, cover-dated August 1962, by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. It was the last issue of a title Marvel was cancelling anyway.

21. What did Marvel's publisher think of the pitch? Very little. Stan Lee recalled Martin Goodman giving him a thousand reasons it would fail: nobody likes spiders, it sounds too much like Superman, and a teenager cannot be a superhero. Lee got it into the final issue of a dying anthology because there was nothing left to lose. By the end of 1962 it was Marvel's best-selling single issue.

22. Who says "with great power comes great responsibility" in that first story? Nobody. It appears in the last panel as a narration caption reading "with great power there must also come great responsibility". Uncle Ben is not the speaker. The first time he actually says a version of the line in a comic is The Amazing Spider-Man volume 2 issue 38, written by J. Michael Straczynski in 2002, the same year the Sam Raimi film put it in his mouth.

23. Which issue killed Gwen Stacy? The Amazing Spider-Man issue 121, in 1973, in a story titled The Night Gwen Stacy Died. She had been introduced eight years earlier in issue 31, cover-dated December 1965.

24. Where did Venom come from? In stages. The black suit first appears in The Amazing Spider-Man issue 252, May 1984. Eddie Brock is introduced as a character in Web of Spider-Man issue 18, September 1986. The two combine into Venom's full debut in The Amazing Spider-Man issue 300, May 1988, written by David Michelinie and drawn by Todd McFarlane.

25. When did Miles Morales first appear? Ultimate Fallout issue 4, August 2011, created by Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli. That is seven years before Into the Spider-Verse reached cinemas.
