Spy x Family by Tatsuya Endo is, on the surface, a spy comedy. Under the surface, it is one of the more emotionally precise explorations of found family in contemporary manga. Every character in it is hiding something — and the things they are hiding turn out to be the most honest version of who they are.

Loid Forger is Twilight — a spy from Westalis whose entire adult life has been a series of missions, identities, and carefully maintained distances. Loid is extraordinarily competent. He can become anyone, anticipate almost anything, and execute under pressure in ways that should not be humanly possible. Yor Forger — The Fierce Devotee
Yor Briar is the Thorn Princess, an assassin who kills with a calm efficiency that her cheerful, socially uncertain daytime self would seem completely incapable of. She agreed to be Loid's fake wife because it solved a practical problem, and she stayed because the arrangement became something she chose.
Yor is genuinely awkward in ordinary social situations. She misreads cues, says things with a directness that startles people, and worries constantly about whether she is doing the softer things adequately. She is better at all of it than she believes.
What defines Yor is not her combat ability but her loyalty. When she commits to protecting someone, the commitment is absolute. She does not weigh the cost. Anya and Loid are hers to protect, and she will do that completely.
You might be Yor if: You are more capable than you give yourself credit for in the areas that embarrass you most. When you commit to someone, you commit fully. You sometimes worry you are not enough — and the people who know you find that baffling.
Anya Forger — The Perceptive Chaos Agent
Anya is a five-year-old telepath adopted from an orphanage who knows her father is a spy, her mother is an assassin, and that she is not supposed to know any of this. She is the engine of the series — the one who holds all the information and uses it to try to make the family work.
She is also extremely dramatic. Anya experiences everything at full emotional volume. Joy, disappointment, embarrassment, excitement — all of it is on her face immediately, before she can decide whether to hide it.
What is easy to miss about Anya is how hard she is working. She wants this family. Every scheme, every test preparation, every dramatic overreaction is in service of that. She is five years old and she is doing everything she can.
You might be Anya if: You feel things immediately and at full intensity. You understand more about what is happening around you than people expect. You want very much to belong somewhere and you are working harder than anyone realizes to keep it.
Damian Desmond — The Proud Softie
Damian is the son of Donovan Desmond, the political figure Loid needs to get close to. He is Anya's classmate at Eden Academy, and he presents himself exactly as you would expect a powerful man's son who has spent his whole childhood trying to earn that man's approval to present: proud, sharp, conscious of status.
Underneath this is someone considerably softer who has almost no idea how to access that softness directly. When Anya does something that breaks through his performance — a moment of genuine honesty, an unexpected kindness — his reaction is always outsized and obvious to everyone but him.
His arc is about the distance between the identity he was given and the person he is actually becoming. The two things are not the same.
You might be Damian if: You have high standards, partly chosen and partly inherited. You protect yourself with an exterior that works until it doesn't. The people who see past it get a warmer, more uncertain, more real version of you.
Becky Blackbell — The Confident Ally
Becky is Anya's best friend at Eden Academy and the person in the series most comfortable with who she is. She is extroverted, perceptive, and completely at ease with her position and preferences.
What makes Becky valuable is that she has chosen Anya. In a school environment where status determines most social dynamics, Becky saw something in Anya and decided. She advocates for Anya, pushes her toward things she wants, and is the ally who shows up without being asked.
Becky knows what she wants, knows how to get it, and uses those skills for people she cares about. This is rarer than it looks.
