1. Which club did Ted Lasso coach in his very first appearance? Tottenham Hotspur. The character was created for a set of NBC Sports promos in 2013 advertising the network's new Premier League coverage, in which an American gridiron coach is hired by Spurs and understands none of it.

2. Who invented the character? Jason Sudeikis, with fellow Saturday Night Live writer Joe Kelly and actor Brendan Hunt, who later played Coach Beard. Hunt had lived in Amsterdam and was the football fan of the group.

3. How different was the 2013 version of Ted? Almost the opposite of the one people love. Sudeikis has described the promo version as a yeller and a screamer, a Bobby Knight type, loud and clueless with no self-awareness. The kindness, curiosity and emotional literacy were added when the sketch became a series.

4. What did Ted coach before he arrived in England? American football. He led the Division II Wichita State Shockers to a national championship, and Rebecca Welton hired him after seeing a viral clip of him dancing in the locker room afterwards.

5. Why is that backstory impossible in real life? Wichita State has not fielded a football team since 1986. The university dropped the sport, so there is no Shockers programme for Ted to have coached, let alone one winning a national title.

Round 2: AFC Richmond

6. Is AFC Richmond real? No. The club, its crest, its kit and its supporters were all invented for the show. Richmond upon Thames has real non-league clubs, but no Premier League side has ever played there.

7. Where is Nelson Road really? Selhurst Park, the home of Crystal Palace, in south London. It is roughly an hour from Richmond, which is why the stadium scenes were shot in a block rather than alongside the rest of the location work.

8. What is the Crown and Anchor in real life? The Prince's Head, a Fuller's pub on Richmond Green that has stood for around 300 years and sits a short walk from Richmond station. Only the exterior is real. The interior, where Mae presides, is a studio set.

9. What happened to Richmond at the end of season 1? They were relegated. The final-day fixture against Manchester City ends in a draw that is not enough, and the club drops out of the Premier League.

10. Where do Richmond finish in the season 3 finale? Second, on 88 points, after beating West Ham 3-2. Manchester City take the title in another match. The club is promoted at the end of season 2 and never wins the league on screen.

11. What does the sign above the dressing-room door say? BELIEVE. Ted tapes it up in the first season. Nate tears it in half in the season 2 finale, and the squad tapes it back together in season 3.

12. What is Dani Rojas's catchphrase? Football is life. He says it constantly, including immediately after the events that most obviously contradict it.

13. What is Trent Crimm's running self-introduction? Trent Crimm, The Independent. The journalist, played by James Lance, names his newspaper every time he asks a question, until he no longer works there.

Round 3: The cast

14. Who plays Roy Kent, and what was his original job on the show? Brett Goldstein, who was hired as a writer. After the season 1 writers' room finished he decided he was Roy Kent, recorded a self-tape of five scenes without being asked, and emailed it to the production.

15. Which scene convinced him to try? The car park scene at the end of episode 5, where Roy startles Keeley. Goldstein has also named the pilot scene containing Roy's line about silence as the one that won him the part.

16. Is Roy Kent based on Roy Keane? Not officially, though the resemblance is obvious. The creators have said the name began as a placeholder and that they were not adapting Keane, only reaching for the same intimidation and gravitas. Goldstein has cited Bill Sikes from Oliver Twist, the Muppets and director Celine Sciamma as reference points instead.

17. Who plays Rebecca Welton? Hannah Waddingham, a stage actor with a long West End musical career before the show. She won the 2021 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Snopes traced the earliest known use of that exact phrasing to an advice column by Marguerite and Marshall Shearer, with related sentiments circulating from the 1970s. Ted being confidently wrong about a quote is in character.

The character was created for Apple TV. He was created for NBC Sports in 2013, seven years earlier, to sell Premier League coverage to American viewers.

The advert version was the same lovable Ted. He was not. The promo Ted is arrogant, oblivious and unpleasant, and the warmth that defines the series version was a deliberate rewrite.
