Who Are the Thunderbolts*?

Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh)
Yelena is the emotional core of the team. A Black Widow trained in the Red Room from childhood, she is fiercely competent, deliberately funny, and carrying grief she has never fully processed — especially around the death of her sister Natasha. In Hawkeye (2021), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine hired Yelena to hunt Clint Barton, blaming him for Natasha's death. By Thunderbolts*, Yelena has apparently put down the contract and taken on something more complicated.
Florence Pugh's performance across Black Widow and Hawkeye established Yelena as one of the MCU's most beloved characters. Her chemistry with every cast member she shares screen time with is the film's greatest asset.
Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan)
Bucky has been in the MCU longer than almost anyone — first as Steve Rogers's best friend in Captain America: The First Avenger, then as the HYDRA-controlled Winter Soldier across multiple films, then as a man slowly trying to put himself back together in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021).
His arc is one of the MCU's longest rehabilitation stories: from weapon to person, from asset to agent. By Thunderbolts*, Bucky is trying to be someone worth trusting — which is harder than it sounds when your entire history has been built on betrayal.
Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian (David Harbour)
Alexei is the Soviet Union's answer to Captain America: a super-soldier built during the Cold War who has spent decades overstating his own legend. He is loud, physically imposing, and genuinely devoted to the people he loves — including his adoptive daughters Yelena and Natasha. David Harbour played Alexei in Black Widow (2021), where he provided much of the film's unexpected warmth and most of its comedy.
On a team of people carrying guilt, Alexei is the one who does not quite grasp the weight of what he has done. That makes him both the team's greatest source of levity and its most complicated moral case.
Ava Starr / Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen)
Ghost is the Thunderbolts* team member with the most sympathetic origin story. Ava's father was a SHIELD scientist whose quantum tunnel experiment failed catastrophically, killing him and leaving Ava with the ability to phase through matter — and the constant, agonising sensation of being pulled apart at a molecular level.
She debuted as the antagonist of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), where her desperation to cure herself drove her to increasingly dangerous choices. By Thunderbolts*, the condition appears to be managed, if not solved. Ghost is not a villain who was redeemed — she is a person who was failed, and who is still figuring out what comes next.
John Walker / US Agent (Wyatt Russell)
John Walker is the most controversial member of the team — and possibly the most honestly written. Appointed as the US government's new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), Walker cracked under pressure, took the Super Soldier Serum, and publicly executed a Flag Smasher with Steve Rogers's shield. He was stripped of the title, given a new one (US Agent) by Valentina, and has been operating as her unofficial operative ever since.
Walker genuinely wanted to be a good Captain America. The tragedy of his arc is that wanting it was not enough. On a team of broken operatives, he fits.
Bob / Sentry (Lewis Pullman)
Bob is the film's wild card. A seemingly ordinary man with a connection to one of Marvel's most overpowered characters — the Sentry, a hero described as having the power of a million exploding suns — Bob's presence on this team raises the stakes considerably. The Sentry's dark counterpart, the Void, is an equally destructive entity. Managing one means managing both.
Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick, Bad Times at the El Royale) brings a quality of quiet vulnerability to the role that makes Bob the team's most unpredictable element.
The Team Behind the Team
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has been quietly assembling these assets across multiple MCU projects — hiring Yelena, recruiting Walker, likely keeping tabs on the rest. Her motives in Thunderbolts* are worth watching closely. She has never been straightforwardly villainous, but she has never been straightforwardly trustworthy either.
Jake Schreier directs. His previous work — Robot & Frank (2012), music videos for Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean — suggests a filmmaker interested in character interiority and people navigating systems that were not designed for them. That sensibility is a reasonable fit for six characters who have spent their MCU lives doing exactly that.
