Preferences organise into dimensions, not genres

That model was later refined into the five factor MUSIC model by Rentfrow, Lewis Goldberg and Daniel Levitin in 2011: mellow, unpretentious, sophisticated, intense and contemporary. The important property is that it is genre free. It is built on the emotional and sonic attributes of the music, which is why it survives translation between countries and decades in a way that a genre list does not. Replications since, including a 2024 study that also tested the model against personality and autistic traits, have recovered a similar structure.
The practical consequence: your genre label is close to useless as a personality signal. What travels is the attribute profile underneath it, and two people who both say they like rock can sit at opposite ends of the intense dimension.
Thinking style predicts taste better than the Big Five
The most striking result in this literature is not about extraversion. In a 2015 PLOS ONE study, David Greenberg and colleagues tested whether cognitive style predicted preference across samples of 2,178 and 891 people, using the empathising and systemising distinction. Listeners biased towards empathising preferred music on the mellow dimension, including R&B, soul, adult contemporary and soft rock. Listeners biased towards systemising preferred music on the intense dimension, including punk, heavy metal and hard rock.
Empathisers favoured low arousal, negative valence and emotional depth. Systemisers favoured high arousal and complexity. Both cognitive style measures predicted musical taste better than any of the five standard personality traits, which is the part worth remembering, because almost every online quiz is built on the Big Five and none of them are built on this.
Streaming data says more than questionnaires do
Self report has an obvious weakness in this domain: people describe the taste they would like to have. In 2021 Ian Anderson and colleagues, including Greenberg, worked with actual Spotify streams instead. The sample was 5,808 users, 17.6 million songs and more than 662,000 hours of listening across three months, described by 211 mood, genre, demographic and behavioural metrics.
Machine learning predicted the Big Five traits with moderate to high accuracy, strongest for emotional stability at r = .374 and conscientiousness at r = .363. That directly contradicted a self report meta-analysis suggesting personality plays only a small role in musical preference. Note what changed: not the people, the measurement. Behavioural metrics such as how often someone skips, how much they repeat, how far they range and when they listen carried signal that a genre checklist threw away.
A correlation near .37 explains roughly 14 percent of the variance. That is a genuine finding and it is nowhere near a readout of your character.

Why one song gets played 500 times
Repetition is not a quirk of your listening, it is the shape of listening in general. Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, whose 2014 book On Repeat covers this directly, estimates that roughly 90 percent of the music people hear is music they have heard before, and every musical tradition studied uses repetition structurally.
Two mechanisms explain the pull. The first is the mere exposure effect, described by Robert Zajonc in 1968: repeated exposure increases liking, and it works even when people cannot recall the earlier exposure. The second is what Margulis calls virtual participation. Repeated passages get encoded as chunked, semi automatic sequences, so the listener anticipates each coming phrase without deliberate attention and shifts from observing the music to moving with it. That anticipation, not novelty, is where most of the pleasure in a familiar song lives.
Which means the person with nine times more plays on their top track than their second is not broken. They are doing the ordinary thing more visibly.
Your taste probably froze in your teens, and that is measurable
Analysing Spotify data for the New York Times in February 2018, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz found that songs released decades earlier are most popular today among men who were about 14 when the song came out, with ages 13 to 16 doing most of the work. For women the peak was about 13, with ages 11 to 14 mattering most. A separate analysis of Spotify listening by Ajay Kalia in 2015 found that discovery of new music slows through the twenties and largely levels off around age 33, partly because listeners drift towards less mainstream artists and partly because they return to what was popular when they were coming of age.
This is the reminiscence bump applied to audio, and it is worth separating from the story people tell about it. Nothing in the data says older listeners lost their curiosity. It says the encoding window was unusually strong and the returns to searching went down. If your rotation is suspiciously loyal to one decade, How Well Do You Know 90s Music? is a cheap test of whether the loyalty is real knowledge or just familiarity, and What Taylor Swift Era Are You? plays the same trick on a single artist's timeline.
What sad playlists are actually doing
Liila Taruffi and Stefan Koelsch surveyed 772 listeners in 2014 and identified four rewards in music evoked sadness: reward of imagination, emotion regulation, empathy, and the absence of real life implications. Participants reported reaching for sad music most often when alone, when reflective or introspective, and when in emotional distress or feeling lonely. The dominant reported effect was comfort and connection, not deterioration.
The honest caveat is rumination. Work by Sandra Garrido and Emery Schubert found that listeners high in rumination gravitate towards music low in positivity and liveliness, and that for those listeners music can sustain a low mood rather than discharge it. So the useful question is not whether your playlist is sad. It is whether you feel better or more stuck after it. That distinction is clinical territory, and a persistent low mood is worth raising with a professional rather than a playlist.
