The Story Behind Wicked
From Novel to Stage to Screen
Wicked begins with Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel โ "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" โ a revisionist retelling of L. Frank Baum's Oz universe that asked a simple question: what if the Wicked Witch wasn't wicked at all, but simply someone who refused to conform to a corrupt world's expectations?
Composer Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin) and playwright Winnie Holzman adapted the novel into the stage musical, opening on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003, with Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. The show ran for over 20 years โ one of the longest-running Broadway musicals in history โ before closing in January 2025 as Jon M. Chu's film adaptation brought the story to an entirely new audience.
The 2024 Film
Director Jon M. Chu, coming off Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, spent years developing the adaptation. His casting of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda was announced to enormous excitement โ two performers with exceptional vocal ability and genuine star power, bringing fresh energy to iconic roles.
Filming took place at Arborfield Studios in England, with elaborate practical sets built for Shiz University, the Emerald City, and the wider world of Oz. The film covers the first half of the musical, with Wicked: For Good โ the second part โ continuing the story.
Key Characters
Elphaba (The Wicked Witch)
Born with green skin that makes her an outcast, Elphaba is brilliant, principled, and passionate about justice for the oppressed Animals of Oz. She attends Shiz University where she meets Glinda, forms an unlikely friendship, and eventually comes into conflict with the Wizard's corrupt regime. Her arc is about what it costs to refuse to compromise your values in a world that demands conformity.Glinda (The Good Witch)
Initially shallow and status-obsessed, Glinda is the most popular girl at Shiz โ beautiful, bubbly, and desperate to be liked. Over the course of the story, her friendship with Elphaba transforms her. Originally named Galinda (she changes it to honor a mispronunciation by their beloved professor Doctor Dillamond), she ends up representing a different kind of goodness: the kind that works within the system to make incremental change rather than burning everything down. The Wizard
Not the benevolent ruler of Baum's Oz, but a charlatan from the real world who has built his power on propaganda and oppression โ specifically, the persecution of the talking Animals who are being stripped of their voices and rights. The Songs You Need to Know
The Broadway Legacy
The original cast recording โ featuring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth โ is one of the best-selling cast albums ever. Both performers went on to enormous careers: Menzel became globally famous as Elsa in Frozen, and Chenoweth has had a celebrated career in TV, film, and concert performance.
When Menzel was called back to the stage at the 2003 Tony Awards to accept the Best Actress award, she did so with a speech that has become legendary in theater circles. She beat Chenoweth for that award โ which made for interesting conversation given their night together.
