Ask someone straight out whether they are protective or playful and you get the version of themselves they would prefer, filed and edited. Ask what their hands do when nobody is watching, or which hour of the day they would pick, and the answer arrives before the editing does. Here the dragon is the one who took the job nobody wanted, the phoenix reaches for starting over first, the unicorn assumes the best on purpose, the mermaid has told nobody the whole thing, the werewolf's body decides before they do, and the fairy gets funny right as it gets serious. They were kept because they pull in genuinely different directions, so the result separates people instead of flattering everyone.
