let me guess which era you belong in

twelve questions about a free armchair, a clock that's five minutes wrong and a museum you got lost in. then i'll tell you which era you're from.

About This Quiz

Most era quizzes ask which city you would visit or what music you like, and the answer with Athens in it is obviously Ancient Greece, so the result is settled before it arrives. This one never mentions history. It asks about a clock that is five minutes wrong, an armchair left out on the pavement, the third day of a heatwave, a wedding guest book. Those small moments separate four temperaments that four very different periods rewarded: the one who asks why, the one who wants to make everything, the one who keeps things running, and the one who turns up and starts the evening. You get one of four, written as a read on you rather than a history lesson. Twelve questions, about three minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

why doesn't it ask about history?▼

Because a question like "pick a dream destination: Athens, Florence, London or New Orleans" tells you which answer is which era before you choose. These twelve ask about a museum, a heatwave and a stranger at a party. Every answer still leads to an era, you just cannot see which one while you pick.

which eras can i get?▼

Four: Ancient Greece, the Renaissance, the Victorian Era and the Roaring Twenties. The result describes how you behave in small everyday moments, not which period you would most like to visit.

does the order of the answers give anything away?▼

No. Over the twelve questions each era sits in each of the four answer slots exactly three times, so where an option appears on screen tells you nothing about where it leads. The whole thing takes about three minutes.

is it historically accurate?▼

Loosely. Classical Athens in the 5th and 4th centuries BC was home to Socrates, Plato and Aristotle and to an early form of democracy. The Renaissance began in Italy in the 14th century, with Florence and Leonardo da Vinci at its centre. The Victorian era is named for Queen Victoria's reign over Britain, 1837 to 1901. The Roaring Twenties were the 1920s boom years of jazz, cinema and new freedoms in cities like New York and Paris. Daily life in all four was harder than any result makes it sound, so treat yours as a read on you, not a ticket back.
